The Romans have never been closer!

Discover the ancient world at the fascinating Petronell Open Air Museum. The ancient baths impress not only with their remarkable size, but also with their marble stucco fittings, murals, and their sophisticated heating and water supply technology.

Rome on the Danube

The true size of the ancient city on the Danube with its 50,000 inhabitants only becomes apparent when you see the 350 m2 model of the city. State-of-the-art video and sound technology make it possible to engage with Roman citizens from long-forgotten times. An experience steeped in history for the entire family.

MUSEUM CARNUNTINUM

Ancient Cultures

The Museum Carnuntinum in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, Austria’s biggest Roman museum, is the highlight of your journey through time into the ancient world. This “treasure house” of the Carnuntum Archaeological Park was constructed by the architect Friedrich Ohmann in the style of a Roman country villa and was opened by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1904. Admire around 1,200 outstanding exhibits which give a fascinating insight into the religious practices of the inhabitants of ancient Carnuntum.

Images of Gods – Images of Humanity

Impressive artefacts give stunning insights into various aspects of Roman life: Religion and society, sacred rites and rituals and the Roman pantheon. Treasures such as statues, reliefs, altars, grave stelai and architectural monuments, virtual reconstructions and audio-visual projections ensure an experience that is both entertaining and informative.

HAINBURG CULTURE FACTORY

Conquest and Discovery Through the Ages

While the spectacular glass terrace of the former Imperial and Royal Tobacco Factory offers breathtaking views of the Donau-Auen National Park, the exhibition inside impresses with the world of the great conquerors and discoverers – from prehistory to the future.

The Hainburg Culture Factory guarantees an exciting and multifaceted adventure! Starting from the Roman Land of Carnuntinum, you are invited to embark on a breathtaking journey of conquest and exploration through time and space. The Romans were not the only ones to leave their mark in the Danube region. Other conquerors followed: The Huns, the Germanic tribes, Avars, Hungarians, Franks, Bavarians and Turks. After the conquerors it was the missionaries and finally the scientists who set out to all corners of the globe. And discoveries are still being made and new technologies developed all over the world. A very special highlight at the end of the exhibition is the insight tower. The 28m long, interactive researcher table will awaken the explorer in you.

The Rediscovery of a Region

Travel through the millennia and circumnavigate the world - but make sure you come back, for our own culture and the Danube region are arguably amongst the most valuable discoveries of the recent past.
